Among the early Anderson immigrants to Virginia was Richard Anderson, aged 17, who left England July 4, 1635 in the ship "Merchant's Hope", arriving in Virginia and settling in Gloucester County. (Boddie, Historical Southern Families, Genealogical Publishing (Clearfield), Baltimore, 1971, Vol XV. page 201.)

There were several Anderson families in the Virginia Colony. Richard Anderson Jr patented lands in Gloucester County in 1662 and was connected with William Anderson who patented lands in Gloucester and New Kent Counties in 1668, 1675, 1676 and 1682. On the 18th of February, 1647, Richard Anderson Jr, minister, witnessed the will of Nicholas Dale in York County. In the lists of early emigrants from England appear the names of many Andersons. John Anderson, age twenty, and Thomas Anderson, age eighteen, "imbarqued in ye Mercht Bonaventure, James Ricroft, Master," January 2, 1634, Richard Anderson Jr, age seventeen, "imbarqued in the Transport of London, Edward Walker, Master," and Richard Anderson Sr, age fifty, "in ye Merchant's Hope, Hugh Watson, Master," July 1635, all to be transported to Virginia.
